Skills for Language Arts by James Stobaugh is a junior high language arts curriculum designed to develop grammar, writing, and reading skills. Lessons are organized simply: chapters are introduced with a brief "first thought," and are followed by learning objectives and a "look ahead" for Friday's assignments. Lessons within each chapter begin with a short introductory paragraph and daily assignment that includes elements such as a warm-up exercise, prayer journal, reading, and vocabulary review. A "Concept Builder" assignment follows. Students answer review questions at the end of the week and take a weekly test on Friday.
34-weeks of assignments revolve around excerpts from classic works such as The Yearling, Les Miserables, Great Expectations, The Time Machine, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Old Man and the Sea, and others. Parents may decide whether students should read the entire work, selections from the work, or summaries. Each of the 34 chapters includes 5 lessons that take approximately 45-60 minutes each, with review lesson each Friday. Tests are not included in this student book, but rather are found in the sold-separately teacher's guide.
The Teacher's Guide includes the full student book pages with correct answers for the concept builders and reviews overlaid, in addition to tests and test answers.
